All That Heaven Allows movingly portrays a May–December romance between Cary Scott (Jane Wyman), an attractive widow, and her handsome gardener-landscaper Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson). Exceedingly lonely since her husband's death, Cary throws conventional behaviour to the winds, facing social ostracism by pursuing her romance with Ron, who is unjustly perceived as a fortune hunter by Cary's friends and family--especially her priggish son, Ned (William Reynolds).

Shot in glorious technicolour with stunning visuals, expressionist colours and evocative symbolism, this portrait of small-town America exhibits Sirk’s full repertoire as one of classic melodrama’s great directors. Screening from a brand-new 4K restoration on the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the film is a potent exploration of themes of social conformism, materialism and hypocrisy. Inspiring generations of filmmakers that followed including Pedro Almodóvar and Todd Haynes, All That Heaven Allows showcases melodrama as vehicle for both visual excess and biting social commentary.
